Genetic, psychological, and sociocultural factors all contribute to binge eating disorder (BED).

According to some researchers, binge eating disorder may run in families for a number of reasons:
- Substance abuse
A majority of patients with BED had a parent with the disease or substance abuse problems
- Neurological issues
Loss-of-control eating behaviors have been prove to be linked with certain neurobiological problems
- Hormonal imbalances
Hormones play a major role in food cravings, satiety, and how we feel, think, and act in relation to food.
