Therapy For Eating Disorders

There are several types of therapy that can be used to treat eating disorders. [10] Following are more details about each therapy type.

CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and CBT-E (enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy)

The goal of cognitive behavioral therapy is to identify the beliefs and thoughts interwoven into your  eating disorder.

Among these could be thoughts or beliefs associated with:

  • Food
  • Body shape
  • Weight
  • Appearance

When these thoughts and beliefs are identified, you will be taught strategies to modify them and to help you manage them. Many mental health conditions can be treated with cognitive behavioral therapy, and those receiving CBT for eating disorders report improvements in related symptoms such as depression and anxiety. CBT-E (enhanced) is a type of CBT used to treat all types of  eating disorders.
