Many of the symptoms are similar to those associated with the binge eating or purging subtypes of anorexia  nervosa. However, people with bulimia often maintain relatively normal weights rather than becoming underweight.

Bulimia nervosa symptoms include:

  • Binge eating episodes that feel out of control
  • Purging as a means of preventing weight gain is common
  • Self-esteem overly influenced by body weight and shape
  • Despite having a normal weight, a fear of gaining weight
