Anorexia and bulimia tell you that you will never be happy until you lose weight, and that your worth is determined by how you look. Happiness and self-esteem only come from loving yourself as you are-and that’s only possible through recovery.

The first step toward recovery from an eating disorder is admitting you have a  problem. You may find this difficult, especially if you’re still holding on to the belief-even to the back of your mind-that losing weight will lead to  happiness, confidence, and success. In spite of understanding this isn’t true, it is still difficult to break old habits.

The good news is that you can unlearn the behaviors you’ve learned. An eating disorder can affect anyone, and anyone can recover from it. However,  overcoming an eating disorder involves more than simply giving up unhealthy eating  behaviors. The goal is to discover who you are beyond your eating habits, weight, and body image, and to learn new ways of dealing with emotional pain.

In order to recover from an eating disorder, you must learn to:

  • Love yourself
  • Accept yourself
  • Listen to your feelings
  • Listen to your body

Remember that no matter how difficult it may seem to achieve this goal, you are not  alone. There is help out there, and recovery is within your grasp. When you receive the right support and guidance, you can liberate yourself from your eating disorder’s destructive patterns, regain your health, and find joy in life once again.
