As opposed to changing your thoughts or feelings, ACT asks you to change your actions. A core principle of ACT is that mental health conditions are caused by reactions to unpleasant feelings like anxiety and pain.

The ACT requires its participants to examine for themselves what their core  values are. After that, they are asked to develop goals that will help them better fulfill  these values.

The goal is to accept all feelings, even the unpleasant ones, and to change your behavior so it more closely aligns with your core values. In this way, it’s believed that you can live a better life and begin to feel better. The effectiveness of ACT as a standalone therapy needs to be researched more deeply.
