It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what causes bulimia nervosa. Dieting is usually the first step, but then extreme and unhealthy weight control methods gradually follow. Several factors are thought to be associated with it:

Often unrealistic social attitudes toward body image play an important role in body dissatisfaction.

It has been shown that bulimia is more prevalent in families who suffer from weight issues, physical and mental health problems, such as substance abuse or depression. In addition, genes might be involved.

Bulimic teens frequently come from stressed-out families with inadequate communication mechanisms, unrealistic expectations, and poorly developed problem-solving capabilities.

Lean sports or activities (e.g., running, ballet or wrestling) as well as sports that involve subjective evaluations (e.g., gymnastics or skating) are associated with a higher rate of  eating disorders. [5]

Bulimia often co-occurs with other mental health problems, such as anxiety disorders,  affective (or mood) disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) problems with substance abuse. Also, they may be dependent and emotionally immature, possibly isolating themselves from other people.
