Everything You Need to Know About Gingivitis (Gum Disease ) – Symptoms, Causes, Prevention and Treatments

Top Causes Of Gingivitis

There are several causes of this gum disease and can be both inflammatory as well as non-inflammatory. The common ones include;

Plaque

Your mouth is full of both healthy and harmful bacteria that combine with saliva and other mouth secretions to form a sticky film known as plaque. It usually coats the outer surface of your teeth and causes teeth discoloration.

When you consume food high in carbohydrates (starchy or sugary foods), bacteria in the plaque turn sugars into the energy they need to grow and reproduce. They also secrete acid and other toxins at the same time that cause tooth damage. Over time, these secretions in plaque begin to hurt and break down your tooth’s surface – leading to tooth decay.

Regular brushing and flossing can not only help remove plaque easily, but also ensure the constant removal of plaque. However, it can harden and form tartar that sticks much more firmly to teeth than plaque. Tartar can usually only be removed by aggressive treatments by a dentist or dental hygienist.
