Some medicines can cause anemia as a side effect of their usage. The mechanism by which these medicines lead to anemia is different. Some drugs inhibit the production of RBCs, while some interfere with the absorption of iron in the intestines. Medicines that mostly cause anemia include:

  • drugs used for the treatment of cancer
  • some antibiotics
  • medicines used to treat malaria
  • seizures medicines
  • HIV drugs
  • Transplant medications
