The patients with macular degeneration also complain about flashing lights. It is mostly seen in the wet form of AMD, and it happens because the new blood vessels formed cause tugging on the retina. This condition should be dealt with as an emergency as it can result in permanent eye damage or loss of vision.  Some patients experience flashing lines for approximately 10 to 20 minutes and can be accompanied by headaches.
