Causes of Macular Degeneration
The real cause for the development of macular degeneration is not known. Researches are still being performed, but thanks to the research done in the past ten years, which has revealed and uncovered some of the clues that can be the cause of disease or some way related to the onset of disease. They include various heredity and environmental factor, including pollution, smoking, diet, and lifestyle.
The condition has been seen to develop in later stages of life, which shows its connection with age. The area of the retina known as the macula responsible for clear vision and a direct line of sight is affected in this disorder. Some of the factors that can increase the risk of macular degeneration include
Age – The disease is mostly observed in aged people above 50, which shows a link to the disease with age. One-third of people over 75 suffer from AMD.
Family history – Several researchers have identified genes to be responsible for the beginning of macular degeneration. The disease has a heredity component, and medical experts have found that several genes are associated with the risk of macular degeneration.
Studies have shown that females are more likely to develop AMD as compare to men because females love longer than makes and have more time to develop this disease. However, males can also acquire AMD depending upon their age and genetic variation. More studies are being conducted to determine the role of genes in progressing the disease.
