The proliferated glandular component in the breasts under the influence of hormones, present as a palpable firm ridge which increases concentrically around the nipple. On palpation, it can be differentiated from the soft fatty tissue in its periphery. The diameter of this circular ridge is measured to scale the degree of gynecomastia. The appearance of this ridge is associated not only with tenderness, but also, discomfort that is subjective in nature. Different patients report with varying degree of concern regarding discomfort. While for some, it may be very annoying; it may not be causing any serious concern in other patients.
