Total Pancreatectomy
In cases where the cancer has spread throughout the pancreas this type of surgery is performed in order to remove the entire pancreas. In addition to the pancreas some parts of gall bladder, stomach, small intestine and spleen are also removed to prevent the spread of cancer. After the removal of the pancreas, the patient is entirely dependent on medications for several body functions such as production of insulin and enzymes to digest food.
