Secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS)

In this type of secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis, the symptoms of the patient get worse more gradually with the passage of time. Also, there is the presence of relapses and remissions in some patients, but in other patients, there is no occurrence of relapses and remissions at all. Still, in both cases, there is a progression of multiple sclerosis. The transition from the first type of multiple sclerosis, which is relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, is very swift. If the patient does not get the proper treatment at the very first stage of diagnosis, the progression is so obvious. Almost 50% of the patients having the first type that is RRMS always transition into the second type of multiple sclerosis. The secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis is the type in which there is an accumulation of disability due to the progression in the worsening of nerves and other neurological functions.
