Hemolytic uremic syndrome – secondary to chemotherapy – occurs when red blood cells are destroyed at a rapid rate causing them to clog in the kidneys, thus not allowing them to remove waste from the blood effectively. In rare cases, this type of kidney damage may be irreversible.
