Plasma exchange has recently developed into an established treatment option in patients with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). It is a technique to remove plasma from the general circulation, allowing erythrocytes to float freely in the plasma, while removing metabolic waste products of red blood cell destruction. Plasma exchange (also called apheresis or plasmapheresis) removes waste products and byproducts of blood cell destruction from your blood. It also replaces some of your blood plasma with donor plasma to relieve the symptomatology of HUS and to somehow improve the prognosis.
