Radiotherapy

Treatment of breast cancer with radiation therapy increases the risk of breast cancer by a small amount. But the need to treat the initial breast cancer balances the small risk. If you had radiotherapy to treat some types of cancer in your chest area, the risk of developing breast cancer is greater than that of someone who has not had radiotherapy. This is particularly true for women who have had chest radiotherapy in the past for Hodgkin lymphoma.

If Hodgkin lymphoma or any other type of cancer needs radiotherapy, your doctors will warn you about this risk. When necessary, they will offer you breast screening. If you are unsure you should have screening, talk to your doctor. Furthermore, radiotherapy is now more concentrated than in the past.
