When people undergo kidney transplants, the immune systems of many of those patients are suppressed to prevent organ rejection. But for some, this can lead to another problem: hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). While not a common complication for kidney transplant recipients, HUS signifies that some of a person’s red blood cells have been destroyed. When this happens, the kidneys cannot filter waste products from the blood effectively.
