Vitamin B12 Food Sources
Plants do not produce vitamin B12 and the only foods that provide the vitamin are from the animal source including eggs, meat, poultry, and dairy products. Strict vegetarians are at higher risk of developing vitamin B12 deficiency if they are not consuming cereals and grains with vitamin B12 fortification. People who have gastric bypass surgery to lose weight are also more prone to lack adequate levels of vitamin B12 as the surgical procedure interferes with ability to absorb enough vitamin B12 from dietary sources.
