Focal onset epilepsy

Epilepsy can be categorized in a number of ways. However, depending upon the involvement of the brain area in the seizure, there are two main types. These are further subdivided on the basis of presentation of episodes of seizures. Classifying and identifying the type of epilepsy in individual cases helps in devising proper treatment plans. [4]

Focal onset epilepsy

Just as the name indicates, these seizures can be traced to a source, or center of origin in the brain. However, these seizures do have a tendency to spread and involve other regions of the brain. it can be further subdivided as:

  • Simple partial seizures: in this type, only one or associated areas of a local sensory or motor region in the brain are involved. This localized involvement result in an interruption in the same sensory or motor function when the seizure ensues. The patient, with this type has a conserved consciousness. The patient is generally able to distinguish the experience of seizure, may have a memory of the experience, and retain the ability to interact with the surroundings, apart from one sensory or motor function which is affected.
  • Complex partial seizure: this type of focal seizure involves aura or other presentations of altered state of consciousness. Confusion, and compromised awareness of surroundings results in abrupt and inappropriate responses to general external environment.
