Discoloration or clammy skin is medically known as cyanosis which occurs in the case of pulmonary embolism patients when deoxygenated blood starts circulating through the skin. the blockage of blood vessels by blood clots in the lungs lead to lower oxygen levels in blood which is more bluish in color rather than red thus imparting blue hue to skin and nails of the patients having pulmonary embolism. However, cyanosis can be a symptom of other severe lung conditions as well so it is important to confirm your diagnosis of pulmonary embolism by ruling out other similar conditions that cause diminished levels of oxygen in blood.
