Pulmonary Embolism Complications

Cardiac arrest
Cardiac arrest

Taking regular medications including anticoagulants can help in maintaining the symptoms of pulmonary embolism but some patients does not respond well to the medications and fall prey to complications of the condition. There is always a risk of pulmonary embolism recurrence and scientists are unclear about its mechanism. A study indicates that more than 22 percent of the people who stop taking anticoagulants with pulmonary embolism experience recurrence. Sometimes, complications arise due to the side effects of anticoagulants in some patients as these powerful drugs increase the risk of internal bleeding. Following are some possible complications of pulmonary embolism:

Cardiac arrest

Cardiac arrest is a condition resulting from the issues in the electrical system of your heart and your heart suddenly stops to beat. There is a disruption with the electrical signals in your heart telling it to stop beating. Pulmonary embolism can result in a cardiac arrest and greatly increases the risk of early death. It is important to treat the medical emergency of a cardiac arrest because it might lead to death in no time. Doctors administer a medication known as tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) in the emergency conditions like cardiac arrest as it can be life-saving treatment. Use of tPA can get the heart beat in a normal rhythm and dissolve the clot leading to blockage in the lungs.
