Pulmonary infarction

One of the most severe complications of pulmonary embolism is pulmonary infarction in which death of the tissues in lung occurs. Pulmonary infarction happens when oxygenated blood suffers blockage to reach lung tissues and provide the nourishment. Generally, a larger clot in the lungs causes pulmonary infarction. Smaller blood clots might break and dissolve on their own in body. Symptoms of pulmonary infarction appear slowly. Since there are no nerve endings in tissues of lungs so there is no appearance of symptoms when there is tissue death in deeper tissues. However, when the symptoms do appear, they include sharp chest pain, fever, and coughing up blood.
