Gravity causes blood to stand in the lower regions of the body during longer periods of inactivity. People who sit for longer time during the day constantly are more likely to develop pulmonary embolism as the blood stagnates in the lowest parts of the body leading to the formation of blood clots. People who sit for longer times because of a lengthy trip, on a bed rest for recovery from an illness, or work could suffer from pulmonary embolism if the sedentary lifestyle goes on for longer time.

Not moving your legs for a long time causes the blood to start pooling in an area, which leads to the formation of blood clots in that area of the legs. It is important for a normal blood circulation to move your body so that there are changes in the blood flow with time. A long vehicle ride for a recreational trip can also make your legs to stay in a position, which can lead to the formation of blood clots. Injuries including hip or leg fractures can also increase the likelihood of developing blood clots more often in some people thus leading to pulmonary embolism.
