Pulmonary embolism results in the right side of the heart to work more which ultimately triggers the heart to produce more irregular or rapid heartbeats. Arrhythmia or irregular heartbeats are most common among patients of acute embolism and it is one of the severe symptoms of pulmonary embolism that might lead to a cardiac arrest if a patient is not taking anti-coagulant medications. Blood clots travelling from the deep veins might move towards the heart via lungs and also lead to a condition known as atrial fibrillation. However, pulmonary embolism can cause more abrupt changes in heartbeat in patients with an existing heart condition by complicating the symptom.
