The procedure will not stop the formation of new clots but keeps them from getting to the lungs and causing severe symptoms. Usually the doctors prefer inferior vena cava filter, when the blood thinners are not a safe option because of a recent stroke or a surgery leading to bleeding in other areas of the body.
