Spina bifida

Spina bifida

The spine is very important in giving structure and to provide support to the body. It helps a person in moving freely and provide flexibility. A person suffering from spina bifida can also acquire scoliosis. It is because of the twisting and curvature of the spine in C and S shape. This progression occurs over time.  About 50% of people suffering from spina bifida also suffer from scoliosis, making spina bifida a cause for scoliosis development. Neuromuscular scoliosis can develop more speedily in people with spina bifida than those who do not. Once scoliosis is diagnosed, the curve can get worse due to frequent progression.   Although the cause of scoliosis in people with spina bifida is not known, it’s more likely to be due to abnormalities of the skin, nerves, and muscles.
