Acute or chronic exacerbation is the worsening of obstructive pulmonary disease. The patient of CF experiences worsening if their respiratory symptoms with time. Gradually the blockage in the airways increase, which makes it hard to breathe. Coughing with shortening of breath and more mucus causes acute exacerbation and requires treatment with an antibiotic.
