Infertility in men

The disease’s effect is not just limited to digestive and respiratory organs, but it can also give rise to reproductive complications. It can even cause infertility in men and women.

Infertility in men 

Almost 98% of the men with cystic fibrosis are infertile because the tube that links the testes and prostate gland is either blocked completely with sticky mucus, or the sperm canal is missing entirety. The absence of a sperm canal in men, also known as the congenital bilateral absence of vas deferens (CBAVD). The sperms in the patients never make it into semen, which makes it impossible for sperms to reach the egg and fertilize it. When sperms are not present in semen, it causes thin ejaculation and lowers semen volume.

Even though the patients of CF can’t become a father, but there are certain fertility treatments and a few surgical procedures that, in some cases, make it possible for the person to become a biological father.
