Mucolytic

Mucolytic

These are the mucus thinner, these medications are inhaled, and they thin the mucus of the lungs. Two types of mucolytic are used for CF therapy

Hypertonic saline- This is a sterile solution that is inhaled with a nebulizer. The salt thins the mucus of the lungs by drawing water from the surrounding tissue.

Pulmozyme- It is a purified enzyme that increases the lungs’ viscosity and thins the accumulated mucus. However, it may carry side effects like temporary loss or change of voice, runny nose, rash, and dizziness.
