Oxygen therapy

Oxygen therapy

It involves using a portable oxygen tank, which is attached with either a mask or nasal prongs, and it delivers oxygen to the lungs. Presently there are no specific guidelines for the appropriate use of long term therapy in the people, and benefits for these treatments have little evidence. However, the treatment has its place for short term treatment of lung disease. As in CF, the patient faces extreme difficulty in breathing, and significant lung damage can cause hypoxemia, a condition with low oxygen saturation. The person with hypoxemia suffers from poor sleep, has loss of muscle mass, and reduced exercise tolerance. In this case, long term oxygen therapy (LTOT) becomes mandatory.
