Ascites
Ascites

It is the condition in which the abdomen is filled with fluid. Ascites can be caused by cancer. According to doctors, ascites is the final stage of cancer. When the cancer starts growing, it starts to create holes and wounds in the lining of the abdomen, the peritoneum. The peritoneal invasion of tumors causes a leakage of fluid into the abdominal space. This is coupled with the abnormal functioning of the drainage system of leaky fluid, the lymphatic system. The lymph nodes become obstructed due to cancer cell invasion. Hence, the leakage of fluid and an inability to drain it, results in ascites. In the setting of cancer, it is more accurately termed as malignant ascites.

Another way cancer can lead to fluid leakage is by compressing the liver. Liver under pressure causes the vessels to compress, causing the fluid to be released from the vessels to the cavity surrounding the area.
