With associated effects on the appetite, and feeling of satiety, tumors in the esophagus or the upper part of the stomach can also cause difficulty in pushing down the food bolus. This difficulty is also accompanied by pain. The increasing size of the ulcer or tumor progression, then plays a proportional role to these discomforts, by narrowing the caliber of the food tract. This difficulty in swallowing can also alter the relaxation and contraction of the muscles of the throat, which is a choking hazard. Ascites and bloating can also cause difficulty in swallowing. It is better to chew the food properly in order to avoid any choking and ease swallowing action of the muscles. Soft foods are preferred over hard foods, but healthy diet should be properly maintained.
