Heartburn is the burning effect in the chest, which happens after having acidic or spicy meals. Severe and recurrent heartburns can indicate underlying illness. Heartburns have nothing to do with the heart, but are caused by the reaction of the acidic secretions of the stomach due to excessive salt and spicy food, with the tissues lining the food tract. It causes irritation and a burning sensation in the throat and stomach. Heartburn can also cause swallowing difficulties.
