Thrombocytopenia Treatments

Thrombocytopenia can last from days to years, depending upon the type and severity of the disease. The people having mild thrombocytopenia may not even require any kind of treatment. If the person has heparin-induced t thrombocytopenia, then he might be referred to blood-thinning drugs. Some of the common treatments include

Medicines

If thrombocytopenia is the cause of the immune disorder, then drugs are prescribed to boost the platelet count. Corticosteroids are usually given for the treatment as they slow down the platelet destruction. These medicines can be taken orally or can be injected into the vein.

But if they don’t show much effect, stronger medication is used to suppress the immune system. The doctor can prescribe immunoglobulin or rituximab that blocks the immune state, and these are injected into the vein. These steroids are different from those given to athletes for better performance.
