Living at high altitudes
Living at high altitudes

Living at high altitudes exposes the eye to ultraviolet radiations which increases the risk of cataract. UV rays are short wavelengths and, hence, have the ability to permeate more into the eye lens. The epithelial cells of the eye lens face oxidative stress when they are heavily exposed to the sun. Due to the degeneration of proteins inside the cells due to radiations, the proteins become clumped up. This building up of protein and clumping may lead to cataract formation.
