Medical and Surgical Treatment options
Surgical treatment
There are various sorts of surgical treatments available for colon cancer. The treatment is decided after knowing the extent of cancer. Surgeries are performed after completely removing the stool from the colon.
Polypectomy
Polypectomy is a noninvasive procedure. If the cancer is diagnosed at the very early stages, polypectomy is performed. During this surgery the polyps or tumors are removed during the colonoscopy. The base of the polyp is disconnected from the inner lining of the colon with the help of electric current. This type of surgery is performed usually when the cancer lies within the colon lining. The samples obtained can be used for biopsy test.
Local excision
This is also a less invasive procedure, but some healthy tissue surrounding the polyp are also removed in order to eliminate the chances of the cancer spread. This type of surgery is also performed with the help of a colonoscopy.
