Importance of water balance
The importance of water and electrolyte balance can be attributed to its properties; to serve as a solvent, a medium, and its ability to maintain the acid-base balance which is termed as buffer action. It is also a lubricating agent serving to decrease the friction in the joints and increase motility in the GI tract. The balance of fluid and electrolytes finds its application in the following:
- Blood circulation
- Lymphatic circulation
- Wash out of toxins
- Lubrication of joint
- Gastrointestinal motility
- Body temperature
- Membrane potentials
- Maintain pH
