Third degree burns damage the entire thickness of the skin. Excessive heat exposure in burns can lead to dryness and desiccation of tissues due to evaporation of water. Damaged skin layers are also unable to serve as a barrier and there can be increased fluid loss through the skin. Dehydration can also delay healing of burns. Burns also alter the microcirculation architecture in the burnt area and its vicinity. Damage to the vessels can also result in leaking of fluid. A fatal complication of burns is hypovolemic shock.
