Water balance is kept in check by the hypothalamus and pituitary hormones and renal mechanisms. In response to decreased fluid volume, a hormone released from the posterior pituitary gland, antidiuretic hormone (ADH) signals the kidneys to retain water and reduce the urine volume. Reduces water volume results in a concentrated urine, which appears in yellowish shades depending upon severity of dehydration.
