Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis
Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis is a disorder of the middle ear, where one of the tiny ear ossicles undergoes abnormal transformation into spongy bone. This results in fixation of the bone, and hence, an interruption in the conduction pathway of sound. This leads to conductive type of deafness. Tinnitus is also reported to be an accompanying symptom of this disease, which arises as a result of the brain’s response to sound deprivation in hearing loss. The surgical procedure for correction of hearing loss, can also alleviate tinnitus. But in some cases, patients have reported post-operative tinnitus, which is proposedly a result of trauma during the surgical procedure.
