Tinnitus, may it be trivial or severe, can pose great psychological and emotional challenges. However, no FDA approved pharmacological agents have made it to the markets to date. Pharmacological management of tinnitus is still under way and is an area of active research and trials. The only drugs that are used in tinnitus patients are the anti-depressants and anxiolytics. These medications are only effective against the emotional component of tinnitus and do not alleviate tinnitus in any way whatsoever. Some drugs like anticonvulsants and anti-histamines are also used off-label for tinnitus. To relieve the sleep deprivation precipitated by tinnitus annoyance, sleep medications can be used.
